Bible Reading

2 Timothy 4:1-8

“I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.” [39:04]

Ephesians 6:10-18

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints.” [55:59]

Matthew 7:24-27

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was its fall.” [35:32] 

Observation questions

1. In 2 Timothy 4:1-8, what are the specific things Timothy is told to do, and what kind of response does Paul say some people will have to sound teaching? [39:33]
2. In Matthew 7:24-27, what is the actual difference between the wise builder and the foolish builder when the storm comes? [36:13] 
3. In Ephesians 6:10-18, what pieces of armor are named, and what repeated action does Paul keep coming back to in this passage? [56:23]
4. Paul says he is being poured out as a drink offering. What picture is being used there, and what does it say about how Paul understands his life and death? [42:10]

Interpretation questions

1.  If bad information leads to bad formation and good information leads to transformation, what does that suggest about why sound doctrine matters so much in everyday Christian life, not just in belief? [35:02]
2. Paul tells Timothy to preach the word in season and out of season, and to do it with patience. What does that reveal about the kind of ministry that remains faithful when people are resistant or distracted? [39:15] 
3. Ephesians says the struggle is not against flesh and blood. How does that change the way Christians should think about conflict, opponents, and spiritual pressure? [48:15]
4. Paul says, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” Why is finishing the race such an important image for Christian faithfulness, especially when life does not look impressive or successful by ordinary standards? [01:04:18] 

Application questions

1. Timothy remained a learner even while carrying real responsibility. Where is there a need right now to stay teachable rather than act like everything is already understood? [32:47]
2. Jesus says the wise person hears his words and does them. What is one part of Jesus’ teaching that is already known but has not been put into practice very steadily? [37:05]
3. The good fight is not driven by fear, panic, or the need to swing at people. When pressure rises, what reactions tend to take over first: anxiety, anger, harshness, withdrawal, or something else? What would it look like to stand in peace instead? [59:19] 
4. Sinners are not the enemy; they are a mission field loved by God. Is there a person or kind of person who is too easily viewed with suspicion, irritation, or contempt? What would it look like to see that person through the eyes of Christ? [01:00:43] 
5. What God has given in Christ, nobody on earth can take away. In what area is there a struggle to actually stand in that security rather than live as if everything depends on personal strength? [57:55]
6. Finishing may look less like public victory and more like quiet faithfulness. What might “completing the race” look like in this season of life in very ordinary terms? [01:06:05]
7. True maturity is shown by being ready to forgive, even while the wound is still fresh. Is there a place where the heart needs to move from looking fine on the outside to asking God to deal with anger, malice, or judgment within? [01:06:47]
